Young Balinese artists collaborate in cross-disciplinary art exhibition Megibung

Young Balinese artists who create different types of art in various media are collaborating for an exhibition project titled Megibung. The artists include Suksma Bali whose art focuses on graffiti, Komunitas Oprasi with their prasi or palm leaf artworks, art handler group Penawar Racun, Black Menu who focuses on art and food, as well as MPSR UPMI with their recycled artworks made from plastic waste. The exhibition is held on 23 October-13 November.

MPSR UPMI presents a collaborative work of an object made from plastics that have been pressed and constructed into a hexagon-shaped honeycomb. Komunitas Oprasi collaborated with photographer Anggara Mahendra, displaying various materials and tools related to the preparation needed for prasi artworks in an installation titled “Reramon Prasi”.

There are two types of artistic collaboration that emerged in the exhibition, namely mixed collaboration and combined collaboration. The former refers to a collaboration where the characteristics from each artist are no longer visible in the artwork. For instance, Suksma Bali created an interactive art installation titled “Lotre”, where visitors are invited to play a lottery game.

Black Menu also offers a different kind of art for the exhibition, collaborating with contemporary music group Kadapat to create an art installation titled “Party Box”. Through the installation, they seek to convey the idea of how the packaging of musical instruments is important so that they could be carried anywhere.

Meanwhile, combined collaboration refers to when each artist’s identities are still apparent in the artwork they created. Penawar Racun did this method. They highlighted how artists usually “present” and “pack” their arts in their art installation titled “Mengemas Gagasan”.
