Chanel receives backlash after releasing $825 advent calendar
Chanel is facing a wave of backlash on social media after the luxury brand released its 2021 advent calendar in the shape of a giant Chanel N°5 eau de parfum bottle.
Underwhelmed customers voiced their criticism by creating TikTok contents, showing how the advent calendar only contains items that are not worth its price of $825 (almost Rp12 million).
It was revealed that the advent calendar package only includes a dust bag, a plastic bracelet, a paper flip book and several sticker sets. All of the beauty products inside, such as two red lipsticks as well as a perfume and body lotion, are sample-sized.
TikTok user @eliseharmon who made a video of her unboxing each out of 27 boxes included in the calendar said that Chanel’s TikTok account blocked her. Apparently, Chanel has also deleted its TikTok account after videos roasting its advent calendar went viral.
However, High Snobiety pointed out that actually Chanel clearly states the content of the calendar. Thus, “technically, joke's on anyone who spent nearly $1,000 on the collectible”.
As Christmas is approaching, brands begin to release their own advent calendar for the sake of hype and conversation. Luxury brand Dior also released its advent calendar for $550. Unlike Chanel, Dior’s advent calendar received great reviews in social media.
