Rubicon: a collaboration to tackle Bandung’s urban issues

Goethe-Institut Bandung, Institut Français Indonesia (IFI) and Rakarsa Foundation initiated Rubicon, a multidisciplinary programme aimed at responding to the rising issues in the Bandung urban landscape. The three organisations will run the programme throughout 2021 and provide a space for artists, culture experts, students, activists and civil society initiatives to explore the many different shapes of sustainable interdisciplinary collaboration.

Especially during the pandemic, interdisciplinary collaboration and solidarity become crucial for urban living. Therefore, Rubicon comes with three themes: “Redefine—Identity and Collective Diversity”, “Reconnect—Social Justice and Empowerment” and “Reform—Environment and Sustainability”. Rubicon encourages anyone in the city to work together with these three themes as the main focus to create ideas or sustainable solutions for urban communities during and after the COVID-19 crisis.

Ngopi, a series of unconferences from February to June, kickstarted the programme. It will be followed by Kotaton, a hackathon and workshop that involves cultural experts from Indonesia, Germany and France. The winners of this session will have their ideas built into prototypes. The event will end in December with an exhibition showcasing the documentation and networking process as well as the post-pandemic interdisciplinary solutions for the urban challenges in Bandung.

For the Kotaton session, Rubicon is currently open for registration for any individual or collective in Bandung to respond to the event’s three main themes. In the session, all participants will be mentored to finalise their concept and project ideas and to plan their implementation in real life. Along with four other runner-up projects, all projects will be exhibited at Lawangwangi Creative Space, Bandung at the end of 2021.
