Twitter launches Super Follow feature, allowing creators to monetise their tweets
After its announcement back in February, Twitter is testing out its newest feature, Super Follow. With the feature, creators that have at least 10,000 followers will be able to monetise their tweets. Followers are required to pay in order to “super follow” creators and, in return, they will have access to the creators’ subscriber-only content.
Twitter has since the beginning of this year been testing out other new features, such as Spaces, exclusive newsletters Revue and Twitter Blue. In November 2020, Twitter launched a story-like feature called Fleets. However, in August 2021, the social media platform decided to remove the feature as they “haven't seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped”.
Demand for direct payment tools is also increasing. To keep up with this trend, Twitter in May launched a “Tip Jar” feature which allows users to send and receive money on the platform through various payment services, such as Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal and Venmo. Twitter also plans to integrate Bitcoin into the Tip Jar feature.
As of now, only those in the US and Canada using iOS are able to access the “Super Follow” feature and subscribe to selected creators on the platform. However, Twitter said that it will make the feature available to more people globally in the coming weeks.
