Marie Joseph School introduces esports course as extracurricular activity

Marie Joseph School introduces an esports course as an extracurricular activity. The school collaborates with RRQ Academy, a training programme coordinated by Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ), a leading esports organisation in Indonesia. RRQ Academy is known for providing classes taught by professional esports players. 

The school made the decision upon seeing the rapid development of the esports industry and the great potential of esports for its students. Chairwoman of AmKur Foundation Jakarta Carestha Widjaja said that because of online classes, the school noticed that students are spending more of their time playing online games. 

“We want to respond to our students’ needs and direct them to realise that actually gaming could also be useful, not just a time wasting activity. We noticed that students who play online games tend to be more confident and active in school”, she added. 

The programme commenced on 9 August and received great enthusiasm from the students. 

“We have around 70 students enrolled in the programme at the moment, but the number is increasing every day. It became more popular when students spread the word to their friends and when they started seeing a lot of media reports being released,” said a representative of Marie Joseph School. 

Moreover, as they have been doing online classes for the last 12-18 months, the school said that so far, they haven’t had any difficulty or problem in organising the esports course. 

“One of the benefits of an esports course is everything can be done online. As an educational facility, we have a responsibility to provide a vision of success for our students and prepare them for their future, to be a part of Generation Z, by embracing the world that is rapidly changing,” the representative explained.
