Netflix confirms Squid Game season 2, hinting on Squid Game universe
Netflix’s breakout hit "Squid Game" is getting its second season. It was confirmed by Netlix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos during the company’s fourth quarter 2021 earnings interview.
“Absolutely,” Sarandos said. “The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.”
This is consistent with Netflix’s plan to to release 25 Korean originals in 2022 following the global success of "Squid Game".
Earlier, "Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk signalled his plans for season 2, revealing that he was already mapping out future seasons in his head before Netflix ever gave the official green light.
“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice,” he stated.
"Squid Game" has scored as Netflix’s most-viewed TV series. Subscribers worldwide streamed 1.65 billion hours of the show in just the first 28 days of its release. In addition, it won three Golden Globe Awards, including best TV drama. Its actor O Yeong-su won the best supporting actor award.
Sarandos put “Squid Game” in the category of Netflix’s burgeoning bouquet of entertainment franchises as the company sees that this series has a growth potential outside the core streaming service, with live experiences, games and merchandise.
